AG is stalling on definition of ‘political activity,’ Senator says

[South West Organizing Project, “SWOP,”] was instructed by the secretary of state to register as a political action committee four months ago without any explanation for how our work constitutes political activity,” Robby Rodriguez, SWOP executive director, said in a prepared statement.

“We still do not know what this decision is based on so we would like to know, along with Sen. McSorley apparently, and, we suspect, the rest of the nonprofit community, how the state defines political activity when it comes to our legitimate efforts to educate the public about the job their elected officials are doing.”

“Yes, for the first time in my entire life I felt empowered. I voted to make better lives for myself and others.

I have never voted anywhere in these United States. Today was my day. And what a great start to a new life!

Getting back to reality, my cell phone rings and its Amar, and then its Colette from KFTC, “Where are you”. Oh well, so much for my quiet time of reflection. Its back to community empowerment, the real work goes on!”

New Mexico’s SWOP is already getting to work on it’s post-election day organizing. Two excited new interns, Tracy Chacon and Cheyenne Saiz, get to work on the Campaign for a Better New Mexico. “In the next year,” say Chacon and Saiz, “we will be working on the Take Control Campaign where we left off this past summer…”

As SWOP Director Robby Rodriguez says, “Democracy doesn’t end on Election Day.”
